SYNOPSIS

Synopsis:Directed and co-written by Adam WONG (director of The Way We Keep Dancing, featured in the Portrait of Hong Kong series at the Forum des Images in 2024), The Way We Talk brings together Neo YAU, Marco NG, and CHUNG Suet-Ying — winner of the Golden Horse Best Actress award. The film explores the identity dilemmas of a young woman with a cochlear implant (CHUNG), torn between her desire to integrate into the hearing world and her longing to fully embrace the Deaf community, following her encounter with a sign language enthusiast (YAU). Adam WONG’s sixth feature, the project was born in 2020 after his discovery of sign languages through a series of short films. Following a year of pre-production, he gathered long-time collaborators and Deaf actors, including Marco NG, who makes his screen debut here. The film’s dialogue is largely expressed in Hong Kong Sign Language.

*The Way We Talk has garnered significant acclaim, starting with its World Premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. It was an Official Selection at prestigious events like the Deaf Film Festival in Texas, the Deaf Way Film Festival in Washington, and the Tokyo International Deaf Arts Festival. Domestically, it received high praise, earning 7 Nominations at the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Film of Merit from the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Award. About Adam WONG

Adam WONG first rose to prominence with the Hong Kong public thanks to The Way We Dance, a massive local box-office success. His subsequent film, She Remembers, He Forgets, a modest production deeply rooted in Hong Kong's reality, also won over audiences and critics. His work, The Way We Keep Dancing, which was selected for the "Portrait de Hong Kong" programme at the Forum des Images in 2024, is a sequel to The Way We Dance. Filmed during the pandemic, the movie offers a clear-eyed reflection on gentrification in Hong Kong. His sixth feature film, The Way We Talk, has been praised not only by major Asian festivals but also by several festivals dedicated to the deaf community, including the Tokyo International Deaf Arts Festival and the Deaf Way Film Festival in the United States.

About Marco NG

Marco NG was diagnosed as hard-of-hearing due to a genetic mutation at the age of two. Since childhood, he has worn hearing aids and is proficient in both spoken and sign language. Despite his hearing impairment, he dances with ease and plays several musical instruments. In 2023, he was crowned Mister Deaf World at the Miss & Mister Deaf World (MMDW) competition.

About Herman WONG

Herman WONG is the founder of LetSignLanguage and the assistant director of the film The Way We Talk. With over thirty years of experience in sign language interpretation, he is one of the most seasoned Sign Language interpreters in Hong Kong.
