SYNOPSIS

Synopsis:Cinema Strada is a documentary directed by Donna ONG. Against the backdrop of a new Cold War, Hong Kong film critic LAW Kar, now 80 years old, revisits his memories of a century shaped in a city where cultural and political forces collide. He searches for the roots of today’s ideological conflicts and recalls the decisive role cinema has played in defining notions of “good” and “evil.” Having dedicated most of his career to programming and film history research, LAW Kar appears in front of the camera for the very first time. This intimate journey, enriched by personal and cinephile anecdotes — from film criticism to formal experiments, even an audition for Federico FELLINI — unfolds as a brief history of Hong Kong cinema. With tenderness and lucidity, Cinema Strada traces not only 80 years of cinematic memory but also the socio-political transformations of a city in perpetual turmoil, while questioning the place of art and cinema in times of crisis.
